Traveling in the south

December 3, 2006

I don’t know if I have mentioned before but I work for a company called Ferguson. They are a major distributor of construction materials. I work in the Waterworks Division that focuses on underground utility materials. Basically I sell water, sewer, and storm drain pipe, valves, hydrants, and fittings to contractors. Anyway, earlier this week a coworker and I went to Birmingham, Alabama for a class called Introduction to Waterworks. Our class size was about 25 guys from around the US. We are all about the same distance along in our training program within Ferguson. One of the highlights was one of my very good friends was going to be there that I met on a previous training in Newport News, Virginia. He is from Fort Meyers, Florida.

So, we got in Tuesday nigth and class began Wednesday. Not too much to point out for Wednesday but we did go to dinner at a BBQ ribs place called Dreamland. It was excellent. Thursday we toured the plant of one of Ferguson’s largest vendors, ACIPCO, which stands for American Cast Iron Pipe Company. At this plant they make all their Ductile Iron pipe as well. This production is an amazing process and was another highlight of the trip. After a full day of tours and seminars we went to dinner at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse for a fully paid for steak dinner and open bar. Friday would wrap up our training and start our long journey back to the west coast. We started by flying from Birmingham to Atlanta. To our surprise ex-president Jimmy Carter would be joining us. After everyone was seated he went through the plane and shook everyone’s hand. I can now say I have met a president!

Overall it was a great trip and a great opportunity to meet some new people I work with.
